Pilling in antidepressants can be dangerous and sometimes suicidal; therefore, it is always better to counsel a depressed along with prescribing antidepressants. If the counseling therapy is enough then it is always better to do away with antidepressants. The point here is many times people take antidepressants or are prescribed antidepressants without knowing whether they are actually depressed or not. Therefore, a good counseling session is important to determine the case in order to determine the need of antidepressants. Lip Radio did the best thing by urging people to share their moments of mental setback. Lip Radio had invited a local comedian, Geraldine Hickey, who shared similar depressing moments, which inspired him to wipe off this disease from other people’s life through fun and happiness. What a wonderful way to take people out of depression. The talk show named Girls Interrupted is the name of a movie starring Winona Rider and Angelina Jolie, where the actress suffers from Borderline personality. This show urged other people to give their testimonials, who were in turn counseled by those people who had earlier been in mental depression. The main motive as stated earlier was to explain to people that a emotional setback is quite often amplified to give the shape of depression and make life hell for people who have received an emotional setback. The following line from the movie will convey the message better: “Crazy isn’t about being broken, some big secret that swallows you whole…it’s just you and me—amplified”.
Anti-depressants
TagCaution: Pilling in anti-depressants can be dangerous
While it is suggested to cure children depression and moderate adult depression through counseling, it is advisable to to treat acute or clinical depression through the use of anti-depressants. As anti-depressants have many side affects like liver damage, hypertension and even suicide in many cases it is better to be cautious to select the right kind of anti-depressant. SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors)work by slowly assimilating the gaps in the nerve cells, whereas the SNRIs (Serotonin and Nor Adrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors) destroy the enzymes, which interfere with the working of the medicinal ingredients. SSRIs and SNRIs both have their side affects like nausea, dizziness, vomiting and high blood pressure. In such cases if you can go for herbl treatments it would save you of collecting extra sickness baggage and may be alternative cure like meditation do the miracle.
Anti-depressants do not have long-term efects.
I somehow do not agree to Dr.Mirkin when he says that depression cannot be handled by pstcotherapy, but with the intyake of anti-depressants. Dr. Mirkin feels that the causes of depression including feeling of helplessness, loneliness, guilty and sadness are due to the low levels of serotonin and consumption of anti-depressants would enhance it. On the other hand he says that consumption of Wellbutrin, Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft increases the sexual desire. Does Dr. Mirkin guarantee sexual fulfilment during that period? In such cases when it is not fulfilled then the patient commits suicide. Then he goes on to say that a combined regimen of anti depressants may reduce the sexual desire, insomnia and tiredness. However, anti-depressants cannot reduce depression permanently. The patient cannot be kept on antidepressant pills through out his life…I hope Dr.Mirkin would agree to that.
Hypothyroidism may cause depression
In America, about 21 million of people are suffering from Depression. The common symptoms of depression as provided by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMF) are: 1. Constantly sad or anxious mood. 2. Feeling hopelessness, helplessness, guilty, worthlessness. 3. Lacking interest in hobbies. 4. Thought of death, suicide attempts. 5. Physical symptoms such as decreased energy, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, chronic pain. It is quiet easy to diagnose depression, resulting in high annual profits with sale of anti-depressants. It is interesting to know that the symptoms of depression are exact as to the untreated hypothyroidism. Thyroid, if not functioning properly, results in slow thinking, depression, fatigue, headaches, eye and neck problems etc. and might cause depression, leaving the symptom of suicidal thoughts and attempts. People experiencing depression can get thyroid treatment as some of the depression are caused by thyroid imbalances. It cannot be said that depression and hypothyroidism are separate. But a patient after having thyroid treatment can take appropriate measures to reduce depression, such as: (1) Refer to mental health professional expert. (2) Use talk or cognitive therapy. (3) Self care by doing exercises and herbal supplements. (4) Prescribed medication.
