Simple counseling may reduce mild depression

Mild depression may be reduced by a simple intervention of the details of the causes and strategies to curb depression. Researchers at the University of Washington have conducted a study on some college students who have symptoms of mild depression. One week later, a personalized ‘feedback’, including the depression situation of each student and the details of the methods to cope up the depression, was given to half of the participant students. The methods such as exercise, meditation, social support, medication, and treatment resources were given in the letter in detail. One month later, the students who received the letter showed twenty percent reduction in their symptoms. The other group that did not receive the letter showed only eight percent reductions. The Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology has published the report. Earlier, this process has been successfully used in treatment for alcohol abuse.
