P2RX7 is a new gene that is responsible for major depressive disorders in humans. It has showed no association with seratonin. The American Journal of Medical Genetics has published the detail of the research. Till recently, depression was said to be associated with the serotonin system in the brain. But the researchers found that P2RX7 functioning has nothing to do with serotonin. P2RX7 has a major role in the brain’s response to inflammation. This may cause most of the neuropsychiatric disorders. The detection of the gene has opened the way to cure the depression. Anti-depressants are presently targeting the serotonin system only.
