Want your child stay away from depression? Then you keep out of it! Treating a mother’s depression can help prevent depression and anxiety disorders in her child, researchers say they have shown this for the first time. This finding will surely have potentially big public health implications.
It is with a strong genetic component, depression runs in families. But, environmental factors can trigger depression too. For children of depressed mothers, the study results indicate that trigger is sometimes their mothers’ illness acting up! Lead author Myrna Weissman, a researcher at Columbia University and New York Psychiatric Institute believes this.
According to the researchers, effective treatment for mothers could mean their children might avoid the need for prescription antidepressants.
