women31According to a study, Katrina hurricane survivors experienced a doubled rate of serious mental illness right after the months of disasters.



As per the Harvard study, this serious mental illness constituted post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).



The thought of suicide in people with mental illness tends to be lower as compared to pre-Katrina which raised from 6.1 percent to 11.3 percent and from 9.7 percent to 19.9 percent in case of mild to moderate mental illness. This is due to the high level of optimism and resiliency among the survivors.



As per the findings of the survey, more than one-third of people have experienced extreme physical adversity, one-fourth with extreme psychological adversity and 84.6 percent with financial adversity. 7 percent people with serious traumatic, 60.4 percent take life as normal afterwards, 25.5 percent felt it worse and 13.5 percent said better.About three-quarters ofthem became more religious after Katrina.
