A pressing need to forward one’s career and earn a living, growing appetites for luxurious lifestyles, a high salt diet and factors like these have ensued in increasing health problems among the adult population in India. If doctors are to be believed, the country is on the verge of becoming the hypertension capital of the world with over 200 million suffering from high blood pressure. An estimate suggested that every fifth adult in India suffers from problems related to high blood pressure. These are alarming statistics that predict that the numbers could double by 2020. Doctors fear that the prediction could come true if preventive measures are not adopted. It has also been noted that half of the affected population is ignorant of the fact that they are hypertensive. A serious lack of awareness has been witnessed among them. A random survey showed that 9 out of 10 people do not get their blood pressure checked on a regular basis. Most of them felt that there was no need for a check-up. Hypertension results in heart attacks, in most cases, angina and strokes. Doctors advise a change in lifestyle and diet and a regular visit to the doctor would reduce the risks to a great extent.
