According to Barry Labowitz, Director of National Institute of Mental Health, depression is playing havoc with the elderly around the globe and is slowly becoming the most possible cause of deaths.
Depression is not differentiated on the basis of age rather than symptoms vary in young and elder patients. Along with it, risk factors are much different in elder people as compared to the younger ones.
As hypothesized by experts, a cerebrovascular disease causes vascular depression.
As per the figures provided by (NIMH), 13 per cent of the US population comprise elderly people aging 65 and above, out of which those who committed suicide figured 18 per cent of the total in 2000. Two millions of them have depressive illness and five millions have depressive symptoms.
Two kinds of anti-depressants are used by the elder people:
• SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like, Prozac, Zoloft and Pexil.
• Non-SSRIs such as Wellbutrin and Effexor
Beside this, Psycho-therapy can be another option. Mostly depressed patient remains isolated, so going out of home, involvement in work, taking good diet and exercise may help.
The continuing treatment of depression can be getting to work which not only help the patients in getting out of depression but also to keeping it away.
