Homophobia is well alive in Australia and lead to depression in astounding levels-especially among gays and lesbians, according to a study to be released today.

In some way, ninety per cent of gay and lesbian Australians still curb public affection for partners! And almost 60 per cent of them have experienced verbal abuse! — The Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University found.

Canvassing 5500 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, the study is the biggest of its kind in Australia. Past depression has been reported by almost three-quarters, and nearly half reported at least one sign of a major depressive episode! Suicidal thoughts among them were found to be higher than heterosexuals. Compared with 10 per cent of heterosexual men, it is about 16 per cent in gay men!
