According to a Finnish study, depressed kids are more likely to become smokers in adult age. The Finnish study is first of its kind to establish a link between childhood depression and adult smoking. The study was presented at the American Psychiatric Association’s annual meeting, in Toronto. The researchers now want to identify childhood conditions that force child to develop this damaging behavior. Further, the researchers have concluded that boys with extra-emotional behavior at age eight are ten percent less prone to smoke. Earlier a Duke University study had published a report last year on the cause of smoking habits. It found that children, who suffer attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, were more probable to smoke as young adults.

Depression linked with Migraine and vice-versa
The researchers at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit may have found a link between Migraine and risk of depression. The report is published in the journal Neurology. They found that both, Migraine and Depression worsen each other. The research team found during two-year research that migraine patients were five times more likely than normal people to develop major depression were. In addition, patients suffering from depression at the start of the study had over a three-fold higher chance of developing migraines. The researchers said that the study specifies that the link between migraine and major depression is bi-directional. Each disorder increases the danger for the consequent first onset of the other. At the same time, the treatment to improve from both migraine and major depression might be beneficial for patients with both disorders.
Vagus Nerve Stimulators may reduce depression
If no treatment is helpful to fight depression, a brain implant may help. But it can take long duration to show the benefits of the implant. According to the researchers of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, the vagus nerve stimulators (VNS) showed some positive signs within three months. The researchers also analyzed both, the brain changes and mood improvements in the patients at the same time. The FDA has approved the vagus nerve stimulator for use in patients with severe treatment resistant depression last year. The implant discharges tiny electrical pulses and motivate the brain. However, experts are not completely aware that how it helps to reduce depression. Earlier, the electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) had also been experimented but produced short-lived benefits.
Learn to detect symptoms of depression
The New York City Department of Health has presented a survey on the people with depressive attitude last year. It says that normally one in seven adults reported repeated mental distress last year. Dr. John Draper, a psychologist with the Mental Health Association of New York City, says about some distinct behavior revealing depression. He says further that to differentiate between sadness and depression, one has to know the difference between the answers of these two questions i.e. ‘I am having a bad day’ and ‘I am having a bad life’. The doctor has described here the detection signs of depression and ways to help in depressive attitude. Just have a look.
Depression may slow recovery after heart attack
The American Heart Journal has revealed that patients with symptom of depression recover comparatively slowly after a heart attack than patients who does not have depression. Researchers have found that the depression works as an obstacle and the heart of the man with high depression takes more time to be stable. The autonomic system of the patients is said to be the other cause if patients sufer with depression. The autonomic system is also liable for blood pressure, sexual responses. However, if the patients do some physical exercise then no noteworthy connection may be established between the heart rate and depression of the patients. The patients suffering from depression have a low capability to exercise. This makes their recovery slower than the non-depressed patients do after a heart attack.

Verbal abuse in childhood causes depression later
Verbal abuse to the children is as risky as the physical and sexual abuse. Researchers at Florida State University in Tallahassee found in a study that verbally abused children had 1.6 times as many symptoms of depression as those who had not been verbally abused. Moreover, the former were two times likely to suffer an anxiety disorder in their life. The Journal of Affective Disorders published the study. The feeling of humiliation caused by verbal abuse during childhood haunts later too. At the same time, they say that self-critical people may get assistance from cognitive-behavioral therapy. It helps person to identify their ridiculous thinking patterns and swap them with more thoughts that are balanced.
Hypercortisolemia or depression causes periodontal disease
According to a new study, caregivers of person with mental or physical distress should take care of their oral health too. The study has published in the Journal of Periodontology. The study results shows that that being a caregiver to dementia, hypercortisolemia or stress was linked with high sign levels and bigger gingival bleeding in people more than 50 years. Short-term psychological stress was a threat pointer to high plaque levels and long term physical strain was a threat pointer to gingivitis. The findings show the psychosocial risk factors from chronic stress that can disturb some biological functions. The research specifies that the caregiving, generally related with augmented stress, can also be a peril factor for poor oral hygiene.
Depression linked to Type 2 diabetes
Researchers at University of Alberta found, in a study, a link between depression and Type 2 diabetes. The case occurs mostly in young adults. Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, with his associates went for some case studies of Saskatchewan patients. The medical Journal Diabetes Care published the report. The researchers found that newly diagnosed patients of Type 2 diabetes were thirty percent more likely to have had early history of depression compared with people without diabetes. On the other hand, old age depression does not have the same effect. Researchers are further planning to use the report to help depression patients and protecting them to develop diabetes.
