Doctor fought for mentally ill patients

Kenya ranks way below the specified international standards when it comes to dealing with mental health issues. However things are changing for the better, all thanks to Frank Njenga, one of the top psychiatrist of Kenya. He has helped build the first private in-patient psychiatric hospital in Kenya.

Additionally, he has also features on a television talk show spreading awareness on issues regarding mental health.

Present status

Mental health care is an area of least priority for the government which is embodied with other problems. Mentally disable people in Kenya receive little support from government agencies and people in general care little about those suffering from mental health issues.

Njenga sounds critical of the government when he says that little has been done in recent years to care for those suffering. The status of mental health in Kenya is not at par with rest of world and the hospital set up by Njenga is the first effort undertaken by an individual or the government in Kenya.
